Moorgate Inc ("we", "our", or "us") built the Hive app for iPhone. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and your choices. It applies to the Hive iOS app, its widgets, and its Live Activity.
Information We Collect
Data Stored on Your Device
The following data is stored locally on your device (it is shared between the app, its widgets, and its Live Activity using Apple's App Groups feature). Your calendar links are never sent to us; the only parts of your schedule that reach our server are the Live Activity updates described below.
- Your calendar links — the Veracross and Canvas calendar links you paste in.
- Your schedule and homework — downloaded directly from Veracross and Canvas to your device.
- Your preferences — followed teams, your chosen look and app icon, and notification settings.
Hive downloads dining menus and game schedules directly from their public web pages. None of this passes through our server.
Data Our Server Stores
Hive uses one small server we operate (hosted on Cloudflare) for invites, the Ideas board, and the game leaderboard. It stores:
- A random ID created by the app on your device. It is not your Apple Account, phone number, or email, and it is not the advertising identifier.
- The name you enter (first and last), and your grade if you join the waitlist, so invites, posts, and the leaderboard can show who they're from.
- Invite records — your invite code, how many invites you have left, and who invited whom.
- Ideas and bug reports you choose to post, with the name you attach, plus any votes you give and any posts you report.
- Bug report screenshots — if you take a screenshot in Hive and choose to send it, the screenshot of that screen is attached to your bug report. Bug reports and their screenshots are private: only we see them, never other Hive users. Hive only sees a screenshot you take while it is open, and never reads your photo library.
- Game scores — if you post a score from the in-app game, your name, score, and how long the run took, for the weekly and all-time leaderboards.
- A push notification token — if you allow notifications, a token from Apple that lets us send you a leaderboard alert (for example, when someone passes your score). It is deleted if you are removed from Hive.
- Which days the app was opened, counted per random ID, so we know how many people use Hive.
- Live Activity updates — if you turn on the class-day Live Activity, the app sends our server the Live Activity's push token from Apple and the updates for the rest of that day (class names, rooms, start and end times, the next item due for a class, and the meal being served), so the Live Activity keeps counting down with Hive closed. It also sends a token that lets the Live Activity start by itself on your next class day, with that morning's first update. Updates are deleted within two days; turning the Live Activity off deletes the start.
- Usage statistics — so we can see what's working and where new students get stuck, the app counts how it is used and sends those counts once per session, under a separate random ID made only for this (not linked to your name). This includes which screens and tabs are opened, which setup steps were finished or skipped, whether your calendar links are set up (never the links themselves), the kind of site a link opened (for example "Canvas" or "Maps", never the address), game plays, which features are used, whether the Live Activity, notifications, and widgets are on, your chosen look and icon, and the app version. Usage statistics are kept for up to one year.
Cloudflare processes IP addresses to deliver requests. We never store your IP address itself. When you open an invite link or join the waitlist, we keep a scrambled one-way code made from your network address, so the app can pick up your invite after you install it and so we can limit spam. Invite records of this kind are deleted after 30 minutes.
Notifications
Class and homework reminders are local notifications, scheduled entirely on your device. Nothing about them is sent to us. Leaderboard alerts and Live Activity updates are sent from our server through Apple Push Notification service, using the tokens described above; you can turn them off in the app's settings. Notification permission is optional — you can allow or revoke it at any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Hive.
Third-Party Services
Hive uses no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services, and includes no third-party SDKs. Its usage statistics go only to our own server. Ask Hive and Siri answers are worked out on your iPhone with Apple's on-device intelligence; your questions are not sent to us. Spoken questions use Apple's speech recognition. The app connects to Veracross and Canvas using the calendar links you provide, to Proctor Academy's public website and its dining provider's public menu page, to Apple Maps for directions, to Apple Push Notification service for leaderboard alerts, and to our own server on Cloudflare as described above.
Children's Privacy
Hive is designed for high school students. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Data Sharing
Your Choices
- Notifications — allow or disable in iOS Settings → Notifications → Hive.
- Delete data on your device — use Settings → Wipe everything in the app, or delete the app.
- Delete data on our server — use Settings → Delete my data in the app, or email us, and we will delete your name, invites, posts, bug report screenshots, votes, game scores, push tokens, Live Activity updates, and usage statistics.
- Live Activity — turn it off in the app's settings to stop sending Live Activity updates.
